Geothermal

We offer geothermal exploration permits and production leases through direct negotiation or competitive sealed bid. All leases are subject to approval by our board. Exploration permits can be issue by staff for up to 24 months. 

On Thursday, September 25, the State Land Board released a statewide Request for Information to solicit interest in geothermal energy exploration and development on state trust lands. The deadline to respond is December 11, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. MT. Learn more and submit a proposal

Geothermal energy systems extract heat from the earth in order to power electrical generation systems, heat or cool buildings, and numerous other applications. Geothermal systems traditionally install wells to extract heat where there are very hot rocks near the surface of the earth.
